The Historic Old Denmark Hotel -
- Local Icon - Zoned R2 Residential
- Refurbishment-Redevelopment Opportunity
- New Roof and Solid Land Holding
Perched proud high on crest of the Princes Highway, peering northwest to the Bulli escarpment whilst sundrenched from an eastern rise, this gem could be your next project.
A fondly known Icon, The Old Denmark Hotel, may be your next opportunity! Ideally suited to a builder / owner occupier, to either bring a solid freestanding hotel back to life, activating the current development application and deferred commencement for three solid town house sized apartments within the building envelope or a rebuilding of the current hotel and owner occupy.
Mick Roberts of “Time Gents” one of the best hotel publications in Australia, suggests the former pub was established by Danish immigrant Jens Peter Oluf Orvad in 1876.
Commencing trade in 1877 as an Inn and Pub. Orvad had served in the Danish Navy before immigrating to Australia with the fall of Denmark to Prussia in the 1864 war. He arrived in Sydney in 1866 and by 1869 had made his way to Wollongong, marrying Honorah Madden. He established the Inn to support the commencement of tourism south of Sydney with the original property trading with a public bar, sitting room, and guest rooms. Rear stables gave refuge for the horses which delivered patrons on the ”Coach Line” with the watch tower still peeking down on current traffic.
The hotel traded successfully for many years following the re naming in 1896 to the “Tourist Hotel” till 1911. Forced to closes its doors, the property reopened as a Boarding house until approximately 1989 when its closed to be redeveloped.
The vendor has been working with council to redevelop the block to contain three town houses with parking and greenspace whilst maintain its historic charm and western district greenery and escarpment view beyond the Bulli greyhound racing track.
Due to the properties condition, inspections a via appointment only.
