History of the Perth Trades Hall

The Perth Trades Hall was built by the newly formed Metropolitan District Council of the Australian Labour Federation as its new and permanent headquarters. It was built in a grand and enduring style as the headquarters representing all trade unions.

The building was officially opened by the Prime Minister of Australia, Andrew Fisher in April 1912 and became home to and the property of the newly formed, Australian Labour Party with 62 affiliated labour organizations and 47 unions. In 1981 the ALP sold parts of the building to the Trades and Labour Council.

In 1985 Delaney Galleries purchased the whole of the building from the TLC and ALP, amalgamating the titles for the original building and it became an art gallery and offices for many years. Outside and above the main entrance beneath the current signage the original name, Perth Trades Hall, remains intact (reference Ian Monk thesis Perth Trades Hall, 1912 to 1983, Master of Arts, Murdoch University).

Since being purchased by the current owner the property was used as an international language school and then at the expiration of that lease, refurbished and let to the current firm of architects for use as offices. It has been home many other enterprises in 100 years and was the first Scotch College.
